Good News on the Jute Tarp Project
4001 myriophylle bouees P1040534 200x100In the September issue of our bulletin, it was mentioned that the Technical Committee managing the jute tarp project to control Eurasian milfoil on Blue Sea Lake had deferred installation of the jute tarps until 2020, pending word on an application for external funding from the Affluents Maritime program of the Regroupement des organismes de bassins versants du Québec (ROBVQ). In early October, good news, we received word that the funding application had been approved for up to $60,000.

4002 rouleau toile de juteOur task now is to obtain as soon as possible the Authorization Modification from the government authorities for a 2020 implementation, and to devise a plan to acquire the materials and install the jute tarp during the period of June to August 2020 in a manner consistent with the Authorization.

4003 JuteIn the meantime, the Technical Committee is conducting a search process to find a contractor to carry out this work. In the spring, it will likely be necessary to verify the surface area of the five milfoil beds to be covered as part of the project. We plan to proceed with the installation in early summer. As this is an experimental project, the ABV des 7 will oversee the installation and a conduct a number of follow-up inspections in subsequent years.

The project is currently budgeted for $90,000 with $60,000 covered by external funding. The remaining $30,000 will be covered by the Association ($15,000) and the Municipalities of Blue Sea and Messines ($7,500 each).
However, a number of factors (cost of materials, size of milfoil beds, costs of installation) could still affect the cost of the project. To ensure we have the funds to carry it out without further delay, and to fund other initiatives in support of the watershed, the Association is inviting members and supporters to consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Association.

Season’s Greetings
The Association celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019. So much accomplished since its beginnings! Monitoring of water quality; sustained demarcation program of Eurasian milfoil beds by means of yellow buoys; promotion and support of compulsory boat washing; production of information documents; creation and operation of a website; development of an experimental project for the control of milfoil using burlap – these are some of the achievements of the Association since its inception, all thanks to the efforts of its partners, members and volunteers without whom all this would not have been be possible. The Board of Directors of the Association takes this opportunity to wish everyone and their families the best wishes for the holidays and for the year 2020.
