Special Edition - AGM 2018
Please join us for the Blue Sea Lake Watershed Association’s 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday morning, July 21st at the Municipal Hall in Messines. We will be updating you on what is being done to preserve and protect the watershed and give you an opportunity to let us know what you think.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. and will be over by noon. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for registration and membership renewal. An individual membership to the Association costs $20 per year and is required to vote on resolutions and for elected positions.
On the Agenda
The meeting will review the mandatory boat washing program introduced in 2017 by the municipalities of Blue Sea and Messines. This program continues and has been improved with the Association’s support. Both municipalities are strongly committed to ensuring that all watercrafts entering lakes in the Blue Sea watershed are properly washed to prevent the introduction of new invasive species in our waterways.
An invasive species that is already present and a growing problem in Blue Sea Lake is Eurasian Milfoil. The meeting will discuss the Association’s ongoing efforts to address this issue, based on our research throughout the year, and present some new approaches for gaining some control over this annoying and harmful plant.
Thirdly, the meeting will report on an ambitious drive by the Board of the Association to recruit and engage members both residents and cottagers living on ALL the lakes in the watershed. As a result, the Association has more members than ever before. More importantly, by creating a new class of associative membership, we will be able to work with individual lake associations towards our common goal of protecting and preserving the watershed. This will require adoption of amendments to the General Rules of the Association at the meeting.
The meeting will report on the latest results of the ongoing water surveys on the lakes through the RSVL program. As always, there will be an opportunity for members to raise questions and voice concerns about the state of the watershed. This feedback is essential to ensuring that the Association remains true to its mission.
The AGM will conclude with elections to fill vacant positions on the Administrative Council. If this interests you, we encourage you to speak with a current member of the Board to find out what is involved. Please note that article 17 of the General Rules of the Association states that:
"Anyone interested in exercising the function of an administrator can nominate him/herself. Anyone interested in exercising the function of an administrator but is not at the Annual General Meeting can present him/herself as a candidate by either providing his/her written consent or being nominated by an administrator to whom he/she has given his/her verbal consent."
Meeting documents will soon be available on our website. Please click here to access the agenda, the draft minutes to the 2017 AGM, the President’s report, the financial statements and other documents.
We look forward to seeing you on the 21st!
